US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the American president also told his aides that he expects possible renewed strikes on Iran after the US midterm elections in November.
Tehran has sent Washington a new seven-day proposal on restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and resuming broader talks to bring the war to a final settlement.
Under the proposed plan, Iran expects the US to lift the blockade of its ports, ease oil sanctions and unfreeze part of its frozen assets. After that, the sides are to move on to talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
WSJ reports that US officials describe the contacts between Washington and Tehran via intermediaries as “positive and constructive”.
At the same time, Trump is sceptical about Iran’s willingness to meet US demands and expects that hostilities could resume after the November elections.
The Iranian side said it is awaiting an official US response to its proposal.
