This morning in eastern France, a school bus was involved in a crash, killing at least two people — a child and a young person.
DW reports.
Another 16 people were injured, three of them in a serious condition.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot travelled to the scene.
French TV channel BFMTV reported that the incident occurred near the town of Laon (Aisne department).
Laon Mayor Yves Christen said that at around 7am the bus left the road and hit a tree in a ditch.
“The road was slightly wet, and we do not understand why the bus left its lane, crossed the road and ended up in the ditch on the opposite side. Unfortunately, there was a tree in its path, and that is what made this crash so tragic,” the mayor added.
Prosecutors said there were 43 passengers on the bus, including 15 minors, travelling between Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse.
An investigation has been opened into vehicular homicide, but the driver, who was hospitalised after the crash, has not yet been questioned.
