Russian troops are trying to get closer to Kyiv, but are still unable to advance into the capital. This was announced during a briefing by Pentagon’s spokesman John Kirby.

"Obviously, we observe how Russian forces are moving forward or trying to get closer so that they can attack Kyiv from the ground," Kirby said. "We still believe that they are outside the capital, but what we know for sure is that they have intentions for Kyiv."

A Pentagon spokesman said the Ukrainians are "defending Kyiv quite effectively" and that they had "made it significantly more difficult for Russian troops to move forward."

Earlier, Pentagon officials said that Russian troops had lost momentum during the invasion of Ukraine and were not advancing as fast as US intelligence had predicted.
