The best decision for the European Union is to accept Ukraine as a rightful member.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, said about it on Twitter during the session in the European Parliament.

"The best decision which the European Union can make now is to accept Ukraine as a new full-fledged member of the EU without delay. Right now, make Ukraine a rightful member of the EU. Historic times require big and historic decisions which can change the flow of events. This step is such a decision." – he writes.

The EU has so far said that they "congratulate the granting of Ukraine candidate status." However, Ukraine requires full membership.

Candidates for EU membership are Turkey (since 1987), North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia. The membership negotiating process has lasted for decades.

Yesterday, President Vladimir Zelensky signed an application to join the European Union. The signing took place against the background of barricades and trenches built in connection with the full-scale Russian invasion. Today, Ukraine's representative to the EU, Vsevolod Chentsov, handed it over to the permanent representative of the French presidency of the Council of the European Union.

So far, the Baltic countries, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Hungary, supported Ukraine's application.

Zelensky stressed in a speech at the European Parliament: "Dear people. We have very motivated people. Very. We're fighting for our rights, freedom, life. And now we're fighting for survival. And that's our most important motivation. But we fight to be rightful members of Europe. And I believe, today, we are showing everyone that we are. Without you, Ukraine will be lonely. We have proved our power, that we are at least like you. So please prove that you are with us, that you do not let us go, that you are truly Europeans. And then life will triumph over death and the light over dark. Glory to Ukraine!"
