The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called for 1.7 bn hryvnyas in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This was announced today by the press service of the High Commissioner.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said it could be the biggest refugee crisis in Europe in this century.

The United Nations estimates that in the coming months, 12 m people in Ukraine and 4 m Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries will need help and protection from Russian aggression. In this regard, the UN calls for $ 1.1 bn over the next three months. The program includes multi-purpose financial assistance to the most vulnerable, as well as food assistance, water and sanitation, support for medical and educational services, and assistance in a shelter to repair damaged homes.

The plan also provides support to the Ukrainian authorities to service and establish transit and reception centers for refugees and to prevent gender-based violence.

The Interdepartmental Regional Refugee Response Plan (IRRRP) provides for a preliminary allocation of $ 550.6 m to help refugees in neighboring countries: Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and others, where Ukrainians are seeking asylum. For forced refugees, the funds raised will help organize shelter, basic necessities, financial aid, as well as psychiatric and psychosocial support.

The head of the UN humanitarian aid, Martin Griffiths, said that "this is the darkest time for the people of Ukraine."

"Families with young children are hiding in basements and subway stations or fleeing while listening to the horrific sounds of explosions and sirens. The number of victims is growing rapidly ... We need to strengthen our response now to protect the lives and dignity of ordinary Ukrainians, " he said.

We will remind you that according to custom services, since the beginning of the Russian invasion more than 520 thousand citizens left Ukraine.
