US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland announced at a Senate hearing that establishing the Iron Dome air defence system in Ukraine is challenging, but the USA is considering the possibility of using other air defence systems, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
In response to Senator's question, Nuland said the deployment of the Iron Dome is complex because it requires training and the ability to deploy it. At the same time, the United States continues to explore the possibility of expanding military assistance to Ukraine by strengthening sanctions against Russia.
Nuland also said that the United States "should consider" adding Russia to the US list of terrorism sponsors.
"Iron Dome" is a development created by the Israeli defence company Rafael in collaboration with the American Raytheon. It has proven itself as one of the world's most effective "killers" of short-range missiles.
Ukraine has asked to close the sky from the Russian missiles and planes from the first day of the war as the enemy has struck at civilians. NATO refuses to close its airspace over Ukraine, explaining it as reluctance to send troops to fight against Russia. That is why Ukraine is asking the allies to hand over enough planes and air defences to close the skies on its own.
Yesterday, the Polish government approved the transfer of all its MiG-29 aircraft claimed by Ukraine to the United States. At the same time, Poland is asking the United States to provide used aircraft with appropriate operational capabilities. Poland is ready to establish the terms of purchase of aircraft immediately. However, the United States said it did not "consider it viable." They said, "it's just not clear that there is enough justification."
