Germany blocks disconnection of Sberbank from SWIFT - Bloomberg

Germany insists that Sberbank of Russia is not included in the list of banks under sanctions, Bloomberg reports.

These banks will soon be disconnected from the international interbank system SWIFT.

According to Bloomberg, the documents show that German authorities have repeatedly called for caution on this step during diplomatic meetings. In the last few days, such meetings have been attended by ministers.

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has publicly called for restraint on the sanctions that could affect the energy sector.

Earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, called on Germany to impose stricter sanctions against Russia. In his piece for Die Welt media, Kuleba suggested abandoning Russian energy, disconnecting Sberbank from SWIFT, freezing corresponding accounts of Russian banks and companies, and banning the Russian ships from entering European ports.

The EU has agreed on a new sanctions package against Russian Federation. It also includes disconnecting three Belarus banks from SWIFT.
