Energoatom quits purchasing Russian nuclear fuel

The state-owned enterprise National Nuclear Power Generating Company Energoatom completely refuses to purchase Russian nuclear fuel as reported by the Company on its Telegram.

Energoatom provides about 55% of Ukraine’s electricity needs with the figure reaching 70% in autumn and winter.

In 2018, the third power unit of the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant became the first power unit in Ukraine to switch from Russian nuclear fuel to the fuel of Westinghouse American company.

Currently, nine of fifteen Ukrainian nuclear power units operate using Russian fuel elements. Other six units – four at Zaporizhzhya NPP and two at South Ukrainian NPP – use Westinghouse’s nuclear fuel.

In 2022, Westinghouse cassettes are to be loaded into Unit 3 at Rivne NPP.
