Update. Shortly after the vote of the UN General Assembly on the suspension of russian membership in the Human Rights Council, Deputy Permanent Representative of the russian federation to the UN, Hennadii Kuzmin said that russia itself is leaving the Human Rights Council today.

The adopted resolution he called "an unlawful and politically motivated step," reports the russian press service of BBC.

On the eve of almost 40 human rights organizations around the world called to exclude russia from the UN Human Rights Council. After the beginning of a full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine with a call to exclude russia from the organization spoke the United States and the United Kingdom.

The last country which was excluded from the Council was Libya in February 2011. This step was taken because of violence against rioters from forces loyal to the then leader of the country Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi was killed in October 2011.

Earlier, the UN Human Rights Council is an international human rights body in the UN system. It was established in 2006 on the basis of the Human Rights Commission, which operated since 1946.

On March 16, russia was excluded from the Council of Europe. Exit from this organization denounces the European Convention on Human Rights.
