President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that after everything the russian military has done in the Chornobyl zone and the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, no one in the world can feel safe knowing how many nuclear facilities, nuclear weapons and related technologies are in russia.
He stated this in a video message.
"If russia forgot what Chornobyl is, then the global control over russia's nuclear facilities and nuclear technology is needed," Zelenskyy said.
The President reminded that the russian occupiers used the Chornobyl zone as a military bridgehead.
"Russian troops which were advancing through the Chornobyl zone used it as a military bridgehead. They set up positions on land where even standing is forbidden. They chased armored vehicles where radiation-contaminated materials are buried and where the number of radioactive particles simply exceeds ...", said Zelenskyy.
The President emphasized that only thanks to the professionalism of the staff working in the Chornobyl zone, as well as at other stations, it was possible to save Ukraine.
Zelenskyy awarded shift workers at the Chornobyl station who did not leave the facility and who supported the work of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant despite the threat to their lives and despite the occupiers' lack of understanding of even the basics of radiation safety.
Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi said that after the russian occupation, the level of radiation in the area of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant has already returned to normal. However, when the russian military was there, it was "abnormal", and the situation in the Chornobyl zone during the russian occupation was "very, very dangerous."
