If full control of the town of Lyman in the Donetsk region is established, the russians will gain a strategic advantage in the next phase of the Donbas offensive.

This was reported by British intelligence in its report, according to the British Ministry of Defense on Twitter.

According to British intelligence, on May 27, russian troops captured most of the town of Lyman, which is strategically important because it is the site of a major railway junction and gives access to important bridges over the Siverskyy Donets River.

Scouts predict that in the coming days, russian units in the area will try to force the river. The bridgehead near Lyman would give russia an advantage in the potential next phase when it will try to advance to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

«If russia did succeed in taking over these areas, it would highly likely been seen by the Kremlin as a substantive political achievement and be portrayed to the russian people as justifying the invasion. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to conduct a well-organized defence of the sector, and continue to impose a high level of casualties on russia», British intelligence stated.

As of the morning of May 28 in the Luhansk region, after fierce fighting, the russians suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat in the area of Severodonetsk, Toshkivka and Oskolonivka. There are active hostilities around the perimeter of the Donetsk region.

According to the General Staff, the enemy continued shelling with mortars and multiple rocket launchers in the Lyman direction in the areas of Ozerne and Dibrova. Airstrikes was struck near the latter.
