The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has confirmed 8,900 civilian casualties, 4,074 killed and 4,826 injured as a result of russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, reported by the OHCHR.
"A total of 4,074 people were killed [1,540 men, 1,014 women, 93 girls and 100 boys, as well as 69 children and 1,258 adults whose gender is still unknown]. Most of the civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide range of influence, including heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket system, as well as missile and air strikes," the statement said.
The OHCHR emphasizes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres proposed easing sanctions against russia in exchange for opening Ukrainian grain exports.
The exact number of dead is currently impossible to determine. According to the Mariupol City Council, during the occupation in this city alone, russian troops killed about 22,000 civilians, but this number may be much higher.
