The Ukrainian parliament has returned the city of Novohrad-Volynskyy (Zhytomyr Region) its historical name of Zvyahel. The region's district is also renamed accordingly.
The parliament resolution says that the renaming was initiated by the Zhytomyr regional council following public hearings.
According to the Zhytomyr regional council, this settlement was first mentioned in written sources in the 13th century as Vozvyahel, later from the 15th century the city was called Zvyahel. In 1793, after the second partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the settlement came under the control of the Russian Empire and was renamed Novohrad-Volynskyy.
