Kyiv gets around 60% of required electricity – YASNO

Due to the state of grids and generation, Kyiv now receives about 60% of the required electricity, of which about 40% goes to critical infrastructure facilities, the rest is divided by the system operator among other consumers, the head of the YASNO energy company, Serhiy Kovalenko, has said.

"First, generation has long been not up to the demand for electricity. The weather makes us use electrical appliances more, use heaters. This overloads the system and increases the deficit," he said.

Another factor of the deficit, according to Kovalenko, is scheduled repairs of generating facilities, as an extremely necessary measure to maintain their performance. According to him, the same overhauls took place before the war, only the system had great opportunities to withdraw these capacities imperceptibly.

At the same time, Kovalenko explained that attempts are being made to balance the lack of generation with the help of hydroelectric power plants, and this is the answer to the question of why electricity is now turned off at night.

"Since the resource of hydropower plants is exhaustible, they cannot work 24/7. It is at night that HPPs are refilled," the head of the company explained.
