Participants of the G20 summit adopted a declaration calling on all countries to adhere to the principles of international law, which include territorial integrity and sovereignty, stated Reuters.

Indian PM Narendra Modi announced that the Leaders' Declaration had been adopted on the first day of the weekend G20 summit in New Delhi. He added that the declaration found compromise wording in the blocks related to Russia's war against Ukraine.

The consensus came as a surprise as G20 is deeply divided over the war in Ukraine, with Western nations earlier pushing for strong condemnation of Russia in the Leaders' Declaration, while others demanded a focus on broader economic issues.

"We call on all states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system that safeguards peace and stability," the declaration said.

"We ... welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine … The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible," the statement added.

"Thanks to the hard work of all teams, we have reached a consensus on the G20 Leaders' Summit Declaration. I am announcing the adoption of this declaration," Modi told leaders in New Delhi, including U.S. President Joe Biden and heads of government from around the world.

A two-day summit of the Group of 20, the world's twenty most powerful economies, started today in India. The leaders of the countries personally came to the event, except Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The summit is taking place in India's largest business complex, Bharat Mandapam, in New Delhi.
