In addition to the border with Russia, the border with Belarus also remains a threatening area. There are currently no significant Russian units there, but intelligence is monitoring the situation.
Andriy Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service, told Ukrinform in an interview.
"We are keeping the situation under control so that in case of danger we can react in time in this area. But we are not sitting idly by waiting, we are reinforcing this border from Volyn to Chernihiv," he said.
Demchenko emphasised that only Ukrainian soldiers can stop the enemy - no fortifications alone can do this. Therefore, it is important to increase the number of border guards
"Increasing the number of border guards is a must today. The SBGS is currently forming and continuing to strengthen its capabilities by creating new brigade-type units. That is, those units that can actually carry out combat operations, armed with artillery and other means to destroy enemy equipment. This is the reason for the increase in the number of SBGS staff, as these units will be responsible for defending the border in the future," the spokesman explained.
"In any case, there will be a new model of border protection: not protection, but defence. Border guards will still be the first on the border, so they must have powerful means to repel an enemy attack in case of danger," Demchenko stressed.
