According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, 42 power units have been destroyed by Russia. Only 27% of large thermal power plants are operating.

The Prime Minister said this during a telethon.

According to him, only 27% of large thermal power plants remain operational, while the rest are damaged or destroyed. 20 hydroelectric power units are currently out of operation, which is another 1.3 GW of capacity.

"The situation in the energy sector is very difficult, Russia has destroyed 50% of our electricity generation capacity. As of today, we have lost 9.2 GW of electricity due to missile and drone attacks, which is half of our capacity that we had last winter, for example. In fact, 42 power units have been destroyed, 27% of large thermal power plants remain in operation, 73% have been destroyed or damaged and are not working today," Shmyhal said.

The government's priority is to restore the system's energy capacity before the onset of winter.

"We are working to restore and launch as much generation as possible for the heating season. We are working to protect what has been restored and what has been preserved," the Prime Minister stressed.

Shmyhal adds that decentralised power generation is currently being developed. Ukraine has agreed with Japan to provide 150 gigawatt generators.

  • On 8 May, Russia attacked six Regions. Three thermal power plants came under attack. The aim of the attack was to deprive Ukraine of the ability to generate and transmit energy sufficiently.
