The European Commission has stated that after the suspension of gas transit from Russia through Ukraine, there are no problems with the supply of natural gas to Europe in 2025.
This issue was discussed on 2 January at an extraordinary meeting of the EU Gas Coordination Group, according to Yevropeyska Pravda.
Gas supplies to EU countries were ensured through alternative routes through Germany and Italy, as well as by withdrawing gas from storage facilities.
‘On 31 December 2024, the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expired. At an extraordinary meeting of the Gas Coordination Group, the European Commission and the Member States from Central and Eastern Europe took stock of the situation... Thanks to effective preparations and coordination, there are no concerns about security of supply in the region or beyond... The European gas infrastructure is flexible and able to receive gas of non-Russian origin,’ the EC stressed.
The European Commission also noted that the EU's energy security has been strengthened by ‘significant new liquefied natural gas import capacities from 2022’.
Thus, the gas storage rate in EU storage facilities is at 72%, which is slightly higher than the average for this time of year - 69%.
