My Women by journalist and volunteer Yuliya Ilyukha has been included in the Financial Times summer selection of the best books in the ‘Translated Fiction’ category, Chytomo reports, citing the Financial Times.
The book was translated from Ukrainian by Hanna Leliv. In the UK, My Women was published by The Indigo Press, and in the United States by 128 Lit. In Ukraine, it was published by Bilka.
In 2024, the collection won Ukraine’s ‘BBC Book of the Year’ award. The book was also shortlisted for the EBRD Literature Prize 2025 and won the 128 Lit International Chapbook Prize 2023.
In its review, the Financial Times describes the book as a collection of short stories in which the devastation caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is portrayed through the voices of women — mothers, wives, widows, daughters and survivors; those who have evacuated, those who have stayed behind, those fighting, and those grieving their losses.
Yuliya Ilyukha is a Ukrainian writer, poet, journalist and volunteer. Born in Kharkiv Region, she is the author of books for both adults and children. Her poetry and prose have been translated into English, German, Italian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Catalan, Polish, Swedish, Portuguese and French.
Hanna Leliv is a translator from Ukrainian into English. She was a Fulbright Scholar on the Master’s programme in Literary Translation at the University of Iowa, a mentor on the Emerging Translators Mentorship Programme run by the UK’s National Centre for Writing, and, from 2023 to 2024, a translator-in-residence at Princeton University.
