President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The leaders discussed how to ensure Ukraine’s financial resilience this year and next.
“We are grateful for the decision on an EU loan of €90 billion, and Ukraine is meeting the commitments associated with it in order to close the budget deficit as much as possible. We agreed that our teams will also work through other avenues of financial support,” Zelenskyy added.
The head of state also said that sanctions against Russia were discussed at the meeting.
“At a time when Russia is carrying out brutal strikes on our people and even now, during the General Assembly, air-raid alerts are continuing in many regions because of drones and ballistic missiles, signals about lifting sanctions on certain Russian oligarchs look suicidal and counterproductive. Wars end through resolve and strength, not through indulgences for the aggressor’s inner circle. I am grateful to Ursula for her willingness to work on adding additional Russian names to the EU sanctions lists,” Zelenskyy concluded.
- On 18 September, Ukraine received another tranche of €3.3 billion from the EU under the Ukraine Support Loan programme. The government stressed that the funds received will be directed to priority defence needs. In particular, this concerns the purchase of missiles and drones.
- On 22 September, our country received $841 million in financing from the World Bank under guarantees from the Canadian government. The funds will be used to reimburse state budget expenditures related to pension payments.
- Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi confirmed that Ukraine has faced a significant budget deficit.
