Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. The parties discussed the restoration of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is under Russian occupation.
This was reported by the press service of Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy.
Shmyhal thanked the IAEA for supporting Ukraine’s nuclear safety since the start of the full-scale war and for the Agency’s experts’ continued presence at Ukrainian nuclear power plants and critically important substations.
They also separately discussed the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of a Russian attack. Shmyhal noted the IAEA’s work in mobilising international support to restore the facility.
They also spoke about assistance to Ukraine’s energy sector. With the IAEA’s support, Ukraine has already received more than 200 deliveries of essential equipment with a total value of over €22 million.
Particular attention was paid to the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Key issues include ensuring reliable and uninterrupted external power supply to the plant, as well as the safe and continuous work of IAEA experts on its premises.
"Thank you to Rafael Grossi and the IAEA team for their practical assistance to Ukraine in the most difficult conditions," Denys Shmyhal said.
- On 5 September, a temporary local ceasefire was announced near the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, mediated by the IAEA, to carry out repair work on a damaged power transmission line.
