As a result of major flooding caused by heavy downpours, around 52,000 households in Thailand’s capital have already been affected. Nearly 4,900 people have been evacuated to shelters.

Since 24 September, more than 300 millimetres of rain has fallen in Bangkok, flooding roads and residential areas. According to the authorities, the downpours have already stopped, but water levels in the city’s canals remain high.
The most difficult situation at present is in the east of the city. Residents are being urged to stay at home, and people living near canals to move their belongings to upper floors.
"The rain keeps falling, and we are doing everything we can. We are trying to pump the water out, but the canals are overflowing. People who live near the canals are at risk. Right now all the canals are full of water," said the city’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt.
People from flooded areas are being transported by boat, while others are wading through the city. According to the authorities, there is currently no information about any deaths or injuries in Bangkok as a result of the present flooding.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department is forecasting further heavy rain over the week. At the same time, the epicentre of the rainfall that caused the current flooding is expected to shift to the central part of the country.
