During a Russian attack on Kyiv, the Taras Shevchenko National Museum in the city centre was damaged.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture.
Specialists are inspecting the building and determining the extent of the destruction.
Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna stressed that Russia continues to deliberately destroy Ukrainian education, science and culture.
- The Taras Shevchenko National Museum is the main literary and art museum preserving the memory of Shevchenko’s life and work. The Ministry of Culture noted that this is not the first time the institution has been damaged: on 10 October 2022, the blast wave from a Russian missile strike had already damaged its building.
- Overall, since the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, 2,138 cultural heritage sites and 2,640 cultural institutions have been damaged or destroyed.
- Incidentally, during the shelling of Kyiv, a Russian drone also struck the building of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which is a historical monument of national significance
