The Prosecutor-General's Office of Ukraine has sent to the authorities of Spain the documents that necessary to start extradition proceedings of Inessa Kadyrova, the mother of the Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleksandr Onishchenko (Will of the People), who is suspected of involvement in the so-called "gas embezzlement".
The Deputy Prosecutor-General Yevhen Yenin told reporters that the documents seeking extradition were sent on Wednesday.
Onishchenko is charged of being involved in a 3 billion hryvnia embezzlement in gas fraud. Investigators believe that the gas produced by Onischenko's companies in the framework of joint activities with the state-owned concern Ukrgazvydobuvannya was sold through fictitious commodity exchanges at low price to related companies and resold already at a market price.
Within this criminal procedure, Ukrainian law enforcers have detained 12 individuals, while Onishchenko managed to flee abroad. The investigation considers Onishchenko, his mother and businessman Valeriy Postnyy were the leaders of the criminal group. Several defendants in the "gas case" have pleaded guilty and made a deal with the investigation.
Onishchenko denies all charges against him.
In March, Onishchenko's mother, who is on the international wanted list, was detained in Spain.
