The fact that two high-ranking German officials will visit Ukraine in one week shows that Berlin cares about Kyiv, German ambassador to Ukraine Ernst Reichel has told LB.ua.
"Germany is a friend and strong supporter of Ukraine. The fact that both President [Walter] Steinmeier and Foreign Minister [Heiko] Maas are visiting Ukraine during one week shows that we care about this country and its people. We will further maintain this active position," he said.
Both visits are expected this week, the German embassy told LB.ua.
On 29-30 May, the German president will meet Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman to discuss reforms and will talk to students of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy. On 30 May, Steinmeier will meet German teachers and students on the occasion of Ukrainian-German Year of Languages.
Maas is also tentatively planned to meet Poroshenko, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and OSCE Special Monitoring Mission members. He also plans to travel to the line of contact in Donbas.
