The Guardian will now use Kyiv instead of Soviet-style Kiev as the name of the Ukrainian capital.
“It has happened. Guardian style guide update: Kyiv not Kiev (except “chicken Kiev”),” its correspondent Shaun Walker tweeted.
Observer and other publications from the same media group will also spell the city as Kyiv.
In October 2018, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and StratCom Ukraine launched an online campaign #CorrectUA, urging foreign media to switch from Kiev to Kyiv.
