NATO to Close Sky over Ukraine – Direct Participation in Conflict

The NATO bloc will not close the sky to Russian missiles and aircraft over Ukraine, as this will mean entry into the war with Russia. According to German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock, this will endanger the lives of millions of Europeans, Deutsche Welle writes.

"If it were simple, we would find a simple solution immediately, today. If we could stop this war, stop the suffering of mothers, fathers, children, we would do it at the same moment. But our responsibility is not to let this war lead to World War III," she said.

The minister condemned the actions of Russia's leadership and said that the Russian president was committing "aggression on a thousand-fold scale".

"His tanks do not bring peace, they only bring misery," she added.

Recall that on 4 March, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that member states were unanimous in their view that Allied military aircraft would not provide a no-fly zone over Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied that all the people who would die after that decision would also die because of the bloc countries that failed to reach an agreement on closing the sky.

The closure of the sky means that the space is patrolled by military aircraft, and the airspace is protected by air defense systems. When the sky is closed, all military planes that fly into a closed area are shot down.

Ukraine asks to close the sky every day, especially after the enemy started shelling Zaporizhzhya NPP. In addition, yesterday the Russians fired 8 missiles at Vinnytsia. After that Zelenskyy said «if the international partners do not close the sky or at least do not give planes for Ukrainians to defend themselves, it will mean that they also want us to be killed slowly».
