Ukrainian specialists resume power supply at Chornobyl NPP

The Minister of Energy called to establish a 30-kilometer demilitarized zone around Ukraine's nuclear power facilities.

Ukrainian specialists resume power supply at Chornobyl NPP

On March 13, Ukrainian specialists of the National Power Company Ukrenergo repaired the Line-330 kV ChNPP Lisna-Chornobyl NPP and resumed the power supply to the Chornobyl NPP and Slavutych.

The press office of the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine, "Energoatom," reported this news.

The Minister of Energy Herman Haluschenko stated that the power supply to the Chornobyl NPP has been restored, but Ukraine still needs the intervention of the world community for nuclear safety.

"Today, thanks to the incredible efforts of Ukrenergo specialists, our nuclear energy specialists, and electricians, we managed to restore power to the ChNPP, which the Russian occupiers seized. Our Ukrainian power engineering specialists, risking their health and lives, were able to avert the risk of a possible nuclear catastrophe that threatened the whole of Europe," the head of the Ministry of Energy said. Haluschenko noted that the cooling systems of spent nuclear assemblies will now work normally, not from backup power. He stressed that the ChNPP is a Ukrainian energy facility, and Ukraine does not need any help from anyone to ensure or restore the electricity supply at Ukrainian facilities. Herman Haluschenko appealed to Ukraine's international partners, the European Commission, the IAEA, the United Nations, and the OSCE to help protect nuclear facilities.

"Yes, our power engineering specialists are indeed heroes, but it is impossible to ensure nuclear security in the face of military aggression. Now, it is imperative to force the enemy to leave the nuclear power plant and establish a 30-kilometer demilitarized zone around Ukraine's nuclear facilities," he said.

Earlier, the Chernobyl NPP was completely de-energized due to hostile actions by Russian occupiers. Fighting made it impossible to repair and restore power.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has lost touch with safeguards monitoring systems at the Russian-occupied Chornobyl nuclear power plant.

The operations with nuclear materials at the ChNPP were stopped. Decommissioned nuclear reactors and radioactive waste facilities are located on the territory. The regulator could communicate with the NPP only by e-mail.

The IAEA has reported that the Director-General of the agency Grossi is personally ready to go to the ChNPP to obtain security guarantees for all nuclear facilities in Ukraine.

The technical staff of the ChNPP, 210 people, has been working non-stop since the station was captured. Russia did not allow workers to be replaced. Staff had limited access to water, food, and medicine.

The Prosecutor General of the Ukraine Office has launched proceedings under the article of the law "ecocide" against Russia's actions at the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhya NPPs.

Iintelligence reported that Russia was preparing provocations at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
