He said this after a videoconference with the heads of states and governments of international partners, as well as with the leaders of NATO and the EU, reports ARD.
The Chancellor also noted that Germany will continue to support Ukraine financially and with weapons, but that weapons will not be supplied from Bundeswehr stocks.
“Germany has exhausted its ability to supply weapons from its stockpile,” Scholz explained, adding that their country’s ability to defend itself must be guaranteed.
According to him, the Ukrainian government, together with German industrialists, is developing a list of things that can be supplied. This order will then be paid for by the German government.
Olaf Scholz stressed that such help must be provided quickly.
“We asked the German military industry to let us know what equipment they can supply shortly,” Scholz said, noting that they are talking about anti-tank weapons and air defense systems, as well as anything “that can be used in artillery combat”.
“Then Ukraine will choose from this list and we provide it with money to purchase,” Olaf Scholz said.
The German government intends to increase its military aid budget for 2022 to two billion euros, and these funds will “largely benefit Ukraine”.
Today, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands announced that the country would send Ukraine “heavier equipment”, “including armored vehicles”.
