The President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is confident in the introduction of the oil embargo and [he] is waiting for this decision to be taken in the next package of sanctions of the European Union.
He told reporters after the meeting with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, as “Ukrayinska Pravda” reports.
"We call on the EU to impose a full energy embargo on oil and gas. Oil should definitely be included in the sixth package of sanctions. Without it, it will not be powerful, but empty," Zelenskyy said.
Asked by a German journalist about Germany's reluctance to impose an energy embargo, Zelenskyy said he had different expectations about oil.
"It seems to me that the EU countries are ready to impose an [oil] embargo," Zelenskyy said, adding that the successful introduction of a ban on russian coal exports was an example.
"We managed to impose a coal embargo, but at Germany's insistence they postponed it for four months. And I think that under pressure from all other EU countries, the embargo will be imposed," the President added.
The President of the European Council Charles Michel also hinted at such hopes.
It will be recalled that the ban on oil and gas imports from russia was not included in the fifth package of the EU sanctions, from which some countries bring a lot of money to russia by paying for energy resources. Ukraine insists on an oil and gas embargo, and some states, such as Poland and the Baltic states, have begun to abandon russia's energy resources on their own.
On 12 April, Zelenskyy called on the EU to include an oil embargo and impose sanctions on all russian banks in the next package of sanctions.
