Ukraine is expecting to get the status of a candidate country for EU membership at the meeting of EU leaders in June. By the end of the next week, Ukraine must send all necessary documents for that.
Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna announced by RBC-Ukraine.
She admitted that a part of the documents, sent by Ukraine, had been processed already. According to her, this work was highly estimated and there were no additional questions. And now, by the end of the next week, the EU should receive the complete book of our nationhood.
“We are expecting in June this year, when the leaders of the EU get together at the summit, Ukraine will get the candidate country status,” said Stefanishyna.
The information about the possibility for Ukraine to become a candidate country in June this year has become public before.
On 28 February 2022, the fifth day of the large-scale war by russia against Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the application for immediate entrance the EU by the simplified procedure. Slovakia initiated such an application for Ukraine and a number of EU countries, including Hungary, supported the decision on fast-track membership.
On 1 March 2022, the European Parliament recommended providing Ukraine with candidate country status to the EU.
During her visit to Kyiv, EU Chief Ursula Von der Leyen gave Volodymyr Zelenskyy a questionnaire for EU entrance herself. On 18 April 2022, Ukraine gave it back to the EU.
After processing Ukraine may receive the candidate country status. Meanwhile, the process of entering the Union may take years.
