Austria tracks down 254m euros in assets that belong to russians under sanctions

Austria has tracked 254m euros in assets that belong to russians who are subject to sanctions.

"Evropeiska Pravda" reported this with reference to "Kurier".

The Office of the Chancellor of Austria reported that they had formed a particular interdepartmental group, including the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the National Bank, the Office for the Financial Market, and several ministries; the group's task is to track the assets.

The group managed to identify 97 accounts with assets worth 254m euros.

"This is more than twice as much as Germany was able to report as of March 2022," - reads the press release.

Besides, the investigators were able to find five entries in the land register, which were intended to conceal the assets.

Other suspicious cases are being investigated, but finding assets subject to sanctions is difficult due to the creation of international companies, trust companies, and nominees.

"When russian oligarchs or their organizations support the war against Ukraine, they are involved in the atrocities there. Therefore, the European Union's response was clear and unambiguous; it included harsh sanctions against many oligarchs and their assets. With these measures, we will hit the oligarchs exactly where they are hurting: their money. Austria will do everything in its power to implement sanctions on warlords and Putin supporters without any "ifs" or "buts," - said Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

At the beginning of May, the Austrian Minister for EU and Constitutional Affairs, Karoline Edtstadler, stated that Ukraine can not become an EU member "in the next five to ten years."
