The governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Kyrylo Shevchenko, has resigned.
"Friends, for health reasons that I can no longer ignore, I have made a difficult decision. I am stepping down as governor of the National Bank of Ukraine. I have tendered my resignation request to the president of Ukraine. I thank the president of Ukraine for his trust and joint work for the benefit of the state - both in peacetime and in wartime," Shevchenko said on Facebook.
He noted that from the first days of his work at the NBU, he was "first of all an anti-crisis manager and fulfilled his mission: ensured the smooth operation of the financial system in the most difficult time of a full-scale war".
He added that the NBU was now "really stronger than ever in its ability to meet challenges and overcome crises, worthy of the test of the war", and "retains its ability to be the basis of the post-war economic recovery and to direct the entire financial sector to it".
"To those who will come after me, I pass the banking system strong, capitalized and stable. I believe that it will remain so in the future," Shevchenko said.
Until parliament makes the relevant decisions on the dismissal and appointment of the head of the NBU, the Board will continue to perform its functions and manage the bank's activities in the existing composition.
Earlier, the board chairman of the national oil and gas company Naftogaz of Ukraine, Yuriy Vitrenko, said he was prepared to resign over the company's debt to investors.
