Almost 3.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been registered in Ukraine since 24 February, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has announced at a government meeting.

He noted that in general, the state has registered 4.8 million IDPs, which is on par with the population of several large regional centres.

"Our duty is to take care of these people, provide them with food, housing, work. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, we have been forming food packages that local authorities distribute among IDPs and residents of frontline communities," Shmyhal said.

He added that the Cabinet of Ministers wants to speed up the process of food distribution and adopted a decision to this end.

It will also allow priority distribution of food packages to those IDPs who are entitled to assistance from the state and international organisations.

"In addition, we will compensate bakers for the cost of baking bread at the expense of part of the products they process. Thus, business will work in the frontline territories and people will have bread," he said.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 5.8 million Ukrainians have left for Poland.

Latvia has received more than 37,000 Ukrainians since 24 February. Most of them received residence permits.
