Today the German Bundestag voted for a resolution recognising the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people, Yevropeyska Pravda has reported.
The non-partisan resolution, which calls for the recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, was draftedd by deputies from the Social Democratic Party, the Greens, the Free Democratic Party, and the opposition Christian Democratic Union.
"Famine and repression affected the whole of Ukraine, not just its grain-producing regions. From today's point of view, the historical and political classification as genocide is obvious. The German Bundestag agrees with this classification," the resolution reads.
It notes that the forced famine was also aimed at "political suppression of Ukrainian national awareness". The political leadership of the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, is responsible for the mass deaths from starvation.
"Thus, the Holodomor is a crime against humanity," the resolution states.
"The Holodomor occurred at the time of the most massive crimes against humanity on the European continent, the cruelty of which was unimaginable until then. These include the Holocaust of the European Jews in its historical uniqueness, the war crimes of the Wehrmacht and the planned murder of millions of innocent civilians in the framework of the racist German war of extermination in the East, for which Germany bears historical responsibility," the document says.
Bundestag calls on the federal government to remember the victims of the Holodomor and promote its international publicity. The government should also oppose "any attempts to launch unilateral Russian historical narratives".
Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Oleksiy Makeyev and former Ambassador and now Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk were present during the voting in the Bundestag.
