Law enforcers have served a notice of suspicion to a contractor who stole one million hryvnias during the repair of the South Bridge in Kyiv.

This was reported by the Main Department of the National Police of Kyiv.

"The suspects include the ex-director of a private enterprise and his deputy. Under their supervision, emergency repairs were carried out to repair the deformation seams of the bridge and its overpasses. The unjustified replacement of materials during the work led to an increase in contractual costs," the statement said.

According to the investigation, in April last year, the director of Kyivavtoshlyakhmist and a private enterprise signed a contract for repair work. An official of the customer company, in collusion with officials of the contractor, decided to misappropriate funds by replacing the construction materials used for the repair with similar but more expensive ones. In particular, a different concrete mix was used during the works, which led to an increase in costs of about one million hryvnias.

Investigators have now served the former director of the private company and his deputy a notice of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code (misappropriation of budget funds in a particularly large scale). The suspects were put on the wanted list. Given that their whereabouts are unknown, the suspects were notified of the suspicion in the manner prescribed by the CPC of Ukraine. The director of Kyivavtoshlyakhmist was served a notice of suspicion earlier, in April.

The participants of the criminal scheme face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
