Ukraine and India agreed on four joint documents during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kyiv. This visit on the eve of Independence Day is very symbolic, as it is the first trip of an Indian Prime Minister to independent Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Narendra Modi for the 16 humanitarian aid packages provided by his country.

The agreed documents cover the medical, agricultural, humanitarian and cultural sectors. They also discussed trade and military-technical cooperation, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a joint briefing.

Ukraine expects India to join the joint communiqué created on the basis of the first Global Peace Summit. Yesterday, the first meeting was held as part of the follow-up to the summit. It was dedicated to energy.

"We are very interested in all the countries of the world joining in solving all the crises that the war has brought," he said.

Next up will be meetings on food security and humanitarian issues.

For his part, Modi said he paid tribute to the children who died as a result of the war.

"Today is a historic day for our relations with Ukraine. Tomorrow is your independence day, it is a very important day, and on behalf of me and the people of India, I will pray for peace in Ukraine and its prosperity," the Indian prime minister said.

He also thanked Ukraine for helping citizens, including children from India, who were caught up in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

  • India is a country to which Russia has been and remains the largest supplier of arms. India's assistance to Ukrainians is limited to the humanitarian sphere.
  • In July 2024, after the obviously fraudulent results of the Russian presidential election, Modi flew to Moscow and met with Putin.
