Starting from 25 August, Ukraine plans to resume electricity exports to neighbouring countries to avoid accidents in the power system.

This was reported by Ukrenergo.

The company noted that as of the morning of Friday, 23 August, the level of electricity consumption in the country has significantly decreased due to the heat wave. Also, a power unit at one of the nuclear power plants was out of scheduled maintenance.

As a result, when solar power plants operate during the day, the Ukrainian power system generates a surplus of electricity.

Ukrenergo also added that the amount of electricity produced should match the amount consumed. To overcome the surplus, which could cause accidents, the company decided to resume electricity exports to neighbouring countries.

‘Exports will take place exclusively during the period of surplus - during the active operation of solar power plants. During periods of maximum consumption, when there is not enough capacity in the power system, electricity will not be exported from Ukraine,’ Ukrenergo said.

On 25 August, an auction will be held for access to interstate crossings in the directions of Romania, Hungary and Moldova. This will help avoid restrictions for Ukrainian electricity producers.

After massive and deliberate Russian attacks on energy facilities in Ukraine, stabilisation blackouts returned this year. They were mainly in effect in June and July, but the situation improved at the end of the month after several units were taken out of service. This week, due to the heatwave, electricity was again restricted, but not as much.
