Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the opening of Russian polling stations in Moldova’s Transnistrian region without the consent of the authorities in Chisinau. In Bucharest, officials said such actions violate Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Romania’s Foreign Ministry stressed that holding elections to Russia’s State Duma on the territory of the Transnistrian region without agreement from Moldova’s constitutional authorities runs counter to efforts to resolve the Transnistrian conflict.
Bucharest reaffirmed its support for Moldova’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
Separately, Romania’s Foreign Ministry condemned the holding of State Duma elections on 18–20 September in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
The Romanian ministry stressed that such actions constitute a serious violation of international law. According to Bucharest, holding Russian elections in Ukraine’s occupied territories cannot create legal consequences or change their internationally recognised status.
Romania also said it does not accept Russia’s unilateral actions which, in Bucharest’s view, undermine the international legal order.
In total, 17 polling stations were opened in Moldova for voting in the elections to Russia’s State Duma. One of them is located in Chisinau and was agreed with the Moldovan authorities.
A further 16 polling stations were opened in the Transnistrian region without the consent of Moldova’s constitutional bodies.
