Stoltenberg: NATO supports Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic aspirations

The NATO Secretary General stressed the importance of reforms in Ukraine.

The NATO bloc supports the aspiration of Ukraine to get a full-fledged member in the Alliance, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told a media briefing on Tuesday, 7 November.

"Ukraine is a close partner of the Alliance. We support Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine," Stoltenberg told an LB.ua reporter.

At the same time, Secretary General did not answer whether Ukraine is in the NATO list of "aspiring nations." To date, this list included only Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Georgia.

Earlier this year, Ukraine has announced the official goal to gain membership in NATO, but the "aspiring nations" list has never been updated.

Commenting on the continued cooperation of the Alliance with Ukraine, Stoltenberg reminded about the July meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission in Kyiv and stressed that Ukraine's main priority should be the reform and modernization of the defence sector.
