NABU opens case on senior intelligence officer

A journalist investigation revealed questionable assets and links.

The National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has opened a case on illegal enrichment involving the first deputy head of the External Intelligence Service and former head of counterintelligence at the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Serhiy Semochko.

NABY Artem Sytnyk said the case was registered on 3 October, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

"I would not hide the fact that we have done a certain analysis of his income statement but registered [the case] today when a TV report (by the Nashi Hroshi investigative TV project) came on the air. We pulled together the files we had and registered it," he added.

Denys Bihus's TV project ran a feature about Semochko's house worth millions of dollars in the Kyiv suburbs and his dual citizenship.

The journalists suggested that Semochko may have had illicit gains from "running protection" for pharmaceutical companies. He allegedly drives a Land Cruiser registered with a non-existent person while his family owns several houses whose value cannot be corroborated by his income.
