Ukraine’s wealthiest tycoon Rinat Akhmetov has suggested the country needs to set up a think tank to overcome economic challenges.

He shared this idea at a meeting of representatives of large business convened by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in order to find solutions on how to combat the epidemic of coronavirus, participants in the meeting told LB.ua

Akhmetov confirmed this an exclusive commentary for LB.ua.

“Now many people are talking about the recession of the global economy and, most likely, a new global financial crisis is possible. This is a very serious challenge for Ukraine, it is necessary to make quick and effective decisions. Because when, figuratively speaking, they (in the world) have a cough, we have pneumonia," he said.

To overcome such problems, in his opinion, it is necessary to promptly set up a "think tank", "a powerful analytical centre which would include the best minds of Ukraine and the world".

“I think big business is ready to pay for the work of such a centre,” he added.

The above-mentioned meeting on 16 March brought together around 15 Ukrainian businessmen, including Rinat Akhmetov, Ihor Kolomoyskyy, Oleksandr Yaroslavskyy, Andriy Verevskyy, Serhiy Tyhypko, Vladyslav Chechotkin, Leonid Klimov, Vitaliy Hayduk, and Andriy Stavnitser.
