Von der Leyen calls oil imports from russia "subject of interest" of further sanctions

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called oil imports from russia a "subject of interest" for further sanctions. Interfax Ukraine reported, citing von der Leyen’s press secretary.

"She especially talked about oil as a subject of interest for sanctions," he said.

The spokesman stressed that the European Commission does not comment on the content of the video conference.

The online summit was organized by the United States and concerned the war in Ukraine. The Prime Ministers of Great Britain, Canada, the President of France, the Chancellor of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Presidents of Poland, Romania, the President of the European Council, and the Prime Minister of Japan were among participants.

As reported earlier, Ukraine has been insisting on an oil and gas embargo since the first days of russia's full-scale attack. However, this was not included in the five sanctions packages. The West has promised to take steps to abandon russia's energy resources, and some countries, such as Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, are already restricting gas flows from russia.
