President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that sanctions against the aggressor-country russia must prove that there is no alternative to peace.
He stated this in his video message at the end of the 56th day of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine.
"The sixth package of sanctions is currently being prepared in the European Union. We discussed it with Charles Michel today. We are working to make it truly painful for the russian military machine and the russian state as a whole.
During negotiations, I always emphasize that sanctions are needed not for the sake of themselves, but as a practical tool to make Russia seek peace," - Zelenskyy said.
He noted that a plan on strengthening sanctions was published today. It includes restrictions on russia's energy sector, the banking sector, export-import operations, and transport. The following steps should include an oil embargo and a complete restriction on russia's supply of oil products.
"When all this is implemented, russia will lose the opportunity to finance the military machine ... russia must be recognized as a state that sponsors terrorism, and russia's armed forces must be defined as a terrorist organization," - emphasized the President.
After a meeting with the President of the European Council, Zelenskyy noted that the oil embargo would be in the sixth package of EU sanctions.
