Latvia to help Ukraine with grain exports through its ports

Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Mykola Solsky paid a working visit to Latvia on April 22-24, the press service of the Ministry reports.Solsky met with the Latvian Minister of Agriculture Kaspars Gerhards and visited the Riga and Ventspils free ports and the special economic zone of Liepaja.

The Minister studied Latvia's port and logistics infrastructure and discussed the possibilities of exporting products of Ukrainian farmers with the help of Latvian ports.

During the visit, Solsky also met with representatives of Latvian local governments, representatives of Latvian port administrations, grain terminal operators, and Latvian grain traders.

Earlier, Latvian President Egils Levits said that the country could help Ukraine with grain exports through its ports. He also expressed full support of the Presidents of the Baltic States and Poland in granting Ukraine EU candidate status and adopting this decision under the accelerated procedure.

The russian occupiers continue to hinder the export of food from Ukrainian ports. David Beasley, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, said that blocking Ukraine's southern ports in the Black Sea could provoke a global food catastrophe that would lead to famine, mass migration, and political instability.

In late March, Ukraine informed about negotiations to send agricultural exports through the Romanian seaport of Constanta. The increase in the volume of transit freight transport is also being discussed.

In the 2019-2020 marketing year, Ukraine became the second-largest exporter of grain crops after the United States.
