The Danish energy company Orsted has announced that it would refuse to pay for russian gas in rubles and admits that supply may be cut in the near future, reports Radio Svoboda.
The deadline for payment is May 31; the company will continue to pay in euros.
"The payment deadline is May 31, and Orsted will continue to pay in euros. Therefore, there is a risk that Gazprom Export will stop supplying Orsted gas. We will consider it a breach of contract," writes the news source, citing the company.
Starting May 31, russia will cut the supply of gas to the Netherlands. The decision was made after the trader, GasTerra, refused to pay Gazprom in rubles.
The cessation of supplies by Gazprom means that by the end of the contract on October 1, 2022, the Netherlands will not receive about 2 billion cubic meters of gas. GasTerra is going to buy this volume from other suppliers.
Earlier, for refusing to pay in rubles, Russia cut off gas supplies to Poland, Romania and Finland. The Russian authorities came up with the requirement to pay in rubles in March after the West imposed sanctions in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
