President of the European Council Charles Michel has announced that Ukraine and Moldova have been granted EU candidate status.
He called it "a historic moment" in a tweet. "Today marks a crucial step on your path towards the EU," he said.
He congratulated Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Maia Sandu and the people of Ukraine and Moldova.
"Our future is together," he added.
Zelensky, for his part, thanked EU leaders: "Sincerely commend EU leaders' decision at #EUCO to grant
