SBU and Defence Forces launch large-scale preventive security operations in northern Ukraine

There may be restrictions on access to and movement through the streets of certain towns and villages, as well as checks of citizens’ documents and vehicle inspections.

The SBU and the Defence Forces are implementing enhanced security measures in the northern regions of Ukraine, according to a statement released by the security service.

It is noted that these measures are unprecedented in terms of the number of personnel and resources deployed in the territories bordering Russia and Belarus, and are intended to serve as an effective deterrent against any aggressive actions or operations by Russia and its ally.

The comprehensive measures involve large-scale preventive operations in the areas of counter-intelligence and counter-sabotage protection across the Chernihiv Region, Kyiv Region, Zhytomyr Region, Volyn Region and Rivne Region.

First and foremost, the work of the relevant units will focus on preventing Russian infiltration into border areas, acts of sabotage and terrorism, subversive and reconnaissance activities, and other war crimes.

There may be restrictions on access to and movement through the streets of certain settlements, checks of citizens’ documents, and vehicle inspections.

Among other things, security forces will:

  • carry out enhanced checks on citizens within the areas where security measures are in place;
  • inspect territories and specific premises to detect items prohibited from circulation.

The preventive measures are being carried out in accordance with the legal framework of martial law.

The operation is being coordinated by the Anti-Terrorist Centre under the SBU. In addition to Security Service units, the National Police of Ukraine, the Armed Forces, the National Guard of Ukraine and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine are also participating.

The SBU has asked citizens to be understanding of any inconvenience, to respond appropriately to the lawful actions and requests of law enforcement officers, to carry identification documents, and to observe the curfew.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia views Belarus and the Bryansk Region as potential routes for further attacks on Ukraine’s northern regions.
  • Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyy stated that the threat of a Russian offensive from Belarus is real. According to him, the Russian General Staff is actively calculating and planning operations.
  • In April, the President of Ukraine reported enemy activity along the Belarusian border and ordered that security measures in the area be strengthened.
  • At the start of the full-scale war, Belarus allowed Russian forces to use its territory to invade northern Ukraine. Minsk is currently continuing to provide the Russians with airspace for launching drone strikes against Ukraine.
