A Spanish F-18 fighter jet, on a NATO mission patrolling Romania’s airspace, shot down a drone that crossed the country’s border. The incident occurred on the morning of August 16.

CNN reported this, citing Romania’s Ministry of Defense.

According to Romania’s Ministry of Defense, radar detected the drone at around 05:01. The UAV entered Romanian airspace from Moldova about 24 kilometers north of the city of Galați.

The Spanish F-18 fighter jet, which was on patrol as part of the NATO mission, established radar contact with the target. After receiving the appropriate authorization, the military engaged and destroyed it.

According to Romania’s defense ministry, debris from the downed UAV likely fell in an uninhabited area between two settlements.

There is currently no information about injuries or damage to civilian infrastructure as a result of the falling debris.

This is already the fourth drone shot down over Romanian territory this year.

  • On August 14, a fragment of a drone was found on the beach of the resort town of Costinești in Romania. It was discovered on Friday near the spot where another drone had been found at sea the previous day.
  • On August 11, Romanian troops destroyed two “Gerbera”-type drones. They were drifting in Romania’s economic zone in the Black Sea.
  • On August 14, debris from another drone was found in the Romanian village of Plauru, for the fourth time in a single day.
