Kyiv city council secretary resigns

He lost the parliamentary election to a propresidential party candidate.

Kyiv's deputy mayor and secretary of the city council, Volodymyr Prokopiv, resigned today.

He told LB.ua that he did so because he is going to head the Kyiv city branch of ex-President Petro Poroshenko's European Solidarity party ahead of local polls. He has held the post since 1 December 2015.

"Back then when the mayor nominated me for secretary, we had an agreement that once I have a conflict of interest, I will tender my resignation, which I did today," he said.

Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has not signed the letter yet.

The letter is to be read out at a meeting of the Kyiv city council. The next one is planned for early September.

Prokopiv has been a Kyiv city councilor since 2014. First time he was elected on the list of Klitschko's UDAR party and then on the list of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc-Solidarity.

Prokopiv failed to get elected to parliament in the 21 July polls, having lost to Servant of the People candidate Oleksandr Yurchenko in Kyiv's constituency No 211.
